Ioniq 5 & Sportage selected as the safest car in the U.S. IIHS crash rating
Hyundai Motor Company's Ioniq 5 and Kia Sportage were selected as 'Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+)', the highest grade, in the crash evaluation announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
This crash evaluation result was achieved by applying more strengthened evaluation standards starting this year. Starting this year, the side collision and pedestrian collision prevention evaluation standards have been raised and the headlamp evaluation standards have been applied more strictly, making it difficult to obtain an excellent rating.
In the side collision evaluation, the objects colliding with the vehicle are heavier and the collision speed is faster than before. The weight of the impact object increased from approximately 1,497 kg to approximately 1,896 kg, and the impact speed increased from approximately 49.8 km/h to approximately 59.5 km/h, resulting in an 82% increase in impact energy.
In addition, a night test, which did not exist before, was added to the pedestrian collision prevention evaluation, and both TSP and TSP+ for headlamp evaluation must receive an ‘acceptable’ rating or higher for all trims.
In order to receive a TSP+ rating, you must obtain the highest rating of ‘good’ in a total of four crash safety evaluations, including ▲ small overlap on the driver’s seat ▲ small overlap on the passenger seat ▲ frontal collision ▲ side collision.
